3D PASSIVE PROJECTOR (White Paper)

Because it switches so fast, and can keep pace with a single MEMS Microdisplay like TI DLP, DigiLens® offers a unique solution to 3D projection displays by providing selective S and P polarized color sequential illumination. Essentially, the DigiLens® solution enables the best attributes of classical active and passive methods. A transmitter is not required; it is effectively integrated within the DigiLens®.

Unlike duel projector Passive solutions, no alignment is required during installation and setup and only a single projector is required. The White Paper details a schematic illustration of a DigiLens® architecture comprising SBG layers a half wave plate (HWP) and a quarter wave plate (QWP). The DigiLens® provides alternate left and right handed circularly polarized light, in sequence, for each of three sequentially switched colors. A non-depolarizing 3D (Silver) screen cloth must be used which are now more generally available.

By updating the microdisplay with alternative left and right eye perspective images the projector provides alternate first and second sense circularly polarized left and right eye images for stereoscopic viewing. The screen is viewed by means of spectacles containing a pair of circular polarizers. The plastic glasses are lightweight, disposable and are typically priced in as low as one dollar – so ideal for large class and business groups. By comparison, active glasses can cost up to $200, ruling it out for most family, business and education markets. The DigiLens® solution collapses this price such that the glasses could be free and inclusive. This opens up the opportunity for 3D in education and business, 80% of the projection market.
